Died: July 14, 1917

Professional: from 1909 to 1914

Octave Lapize, known as a sprinter who could climb, was a 3-time winner of Paris-Roubaix (1909, 1910, 1911) and Paris-Brussels (1911, 1912, 1913). He had wins at Paris-Tours (1911) and the France Championships (1911, 1912, 1913). Lapize's place in TdF history was made in 1910 at the summit of the Col d'Aubisque, when he shouted “Assassins…” at race officials for scheduling the brutal climbs of the Pyrenees Mountains. Lapize went on to win the Tour in 1910. He died July 14, 1917 (Bastille Day) on an aerial combat mission during WW1.
