CyclingRevealed's Giro Perspective

Tappa 2- May 9th, Catanzaro to S.M. del Cedro, 177 km

Gruppo Compatto

Up the Ionian coast for an easy on the legs, flat stage from Catanzaro Lido to Santa Maria del Cedro.

It was a ‘rough and tumble' stage with numerous crashes along the route, but the race came down to the final 1,000 meters. Through the long and straight finishing road in Santa Maria del Cedro the riders braved bumping and barging to stay at the head of the pack.

The stage seemed tailor made for the Fasso Bortolo train and Italian sprinter Alessandro Petacchi. But little Robbie McEwen slipped through a small opening to take the stage win and spoil the day for Petacchi.

The stage win gave Robbie McEwen the race lead and the Maglia Rosa.
