25th World Championship Road Race 1958

By Barry Boyce, CyclingRevealed Historian

An Italian Escape in France

Rems-Gueux, France was the site of the 1958 World Championship Road Race.  The race went off under extreme heat as popular Frenchman Louison Bobet escaped with Gastone Nencini (Ita) and Gerit Vooting (Ned).  Italian Ercole Baldini attacked an elite chase group, which included Rik Van Looy, Rik Van Steenbergen, and Fausto Coppi.  Baldini, unfazed by the heat, bridged the gap to the leaders and rode away solo from lead group.

Italian Ercole Baldini cruised across the finish line 2 minutes and 9 seconds ahead of Louison Bobet (Fra).
