Indurain Matches Ugrumov in the Dolomites

Miguel Indurain returned to the 1993 Giro d’Italia with grand inspirations.

Indurain contained his opponents in the mountains and dominated them in the time trials. Stubbornly Piotr Ugrumov (Let) refused to accept Indurain's waltz to victory in 1993 and launched repeated attacks in the mountains. Indurain had an answer for every attack through 19 stages.

Ugrumov's aggressive climbing finally managed to crack Indurain on stage 20. By the stage finish in Santuario di Oropa the Spaniard did lose time but he held tough, losing only 36 seconds to Ugrumov. His time loss was not enough to give up the race lead. A second consecutive Giro d'Italia victory was his one stage later in Milan.
