SILVER CITY FLYER Masters 45 May 26, 1996

Criterium- After several years with small Masters 40+ fields, the Silver City Flyer would change and offer a 45+ race. The older and wiser riders would not disappoint. A very large and talented field challenged the very technical mile long course. Halfway through the second lap NEMRT's Mike Duck met the pavement in the tight, more than 90 degrees second corner. As the race flew along Mike got a free lap and rejoined the race. Several serious attacks would be caught until with 5 to go BRC's Larry Barbaro, unknown to most of the pack, launched a brilliant attack while the field recovered from a very hard chase. At 3 laps to go the chase got going again but would not catch Barbaro. In the final lap of the race another BRC rider Bill Northrop tried to solo for second place. Only Mike could answer the move and when Northrop faded Mike was left to try on his own. The field was now making it's final, very fast charge for the line and for Mike. Through the final corner and up the hill to the finish Mike hammered and held the lead for 2nd place. Mid-coast Velo's Bill Hartwell sprinted to third place. Barry tired from a late breakaway attempt held on for 7th.
