Montegue Road Race June 6,1992 Masters 45+
Promoted as a good tune-up for the District Road Race Montegue proved to be more a re-play of the District Time Trial with rain and cold temperatures the mark of the day. During the early race the NEMRT contingent, Derek Williams, Henry Wilmer and Steve Jean, waited for the first major climb of the race. Henry kept the pace fast testing the packs strength. A few were shed and a few were able to bridge back to the pack. As planned Derek attacked up the hill on the second lap leaving the field in disarray. Over the top of the climb a breakaway formed that included all of NEMRT along with Dick Martin, EastBay, Luigi del Buono, CCCC, and Earl Page, Jaeger. On the down side of the hill the "Montegue jinx" got Steve again this year. After mechanical trouble last year, Steve found his rear wheel flat as the break cruised down the other side of the hill. With no wheel van Steve was sent to the sideline for the final miles of the race. The next two laps only Derek and Henry seemed interested in setting pace. Susan Wilmer reported from the pace car that Henry did his usual "monster pack-pull" for most of the race only giving up the lead to Derek. Unfortunately Henry's efforts did not shed any more of the breakaway pack. His efforts did however provide Derek time to rest and set-up for the sprint. Up the hill on the last lap Henry tried to break the pack but Earl was stuck to Henry's rear wheel. Approaching the finish line Derek wanted to set a good line from behind Henry and Earl for the sprint. Earl with a sixth sense moved clear of Derek causing Derek to choose a new line and go for the victory alone. Early Derek opened a gap and gamely tried to hold off Earl but at the line he was narrowly defeated. Henry using what strength he had left to push a 53-13, shift to a 53-15 and then a 53-14 in final 200 meters to finish 7th. Again NEMRT showed it's strength from the beginning of the race with Henry's fierce pace to keep the breakaway solid and with Derek dusting off his old sprint legs for a well deserved second place.

1. Earl Page Jaeger

2. Derek Williams NEMRT

7. Henry Wilmer NEMRT

Director of Cycling for NEMRT Barry Boyce said "I'm glad Derek is sprinting so well again, it gives the team a lot of options in a race, also if Henry ever discovers he really can sprint he'll be unbeatable, and if Steve can shake the bad luck he'll have a great shot at the gold at district. I'm glad these guys are with me not against me!" All in all it was another great day for NEMRT and a nice job done by all.
