Bridge of Flowers Weekend July, 1991 Masters 35

Road Race: In the rain, Saturday's 60 mile road race was the old Charlemont race course, except it started downtown. The Stowe team was very active in the early going providing a deversion to the steady rain. In the last 10 miles of the race Steve Levene, Rich Sachs (Stowe) and Ed Morandi (M. Steel) managed to escape the pelaton. The trio quickly build a good lead on the narrow, curvy back roads. Unfortunately, the breakaway fell apart on the first of two steep climbs very near the finish. Mark in the middle of the first wall threw his chain and had to stop for repairs. After regaining the tail end of the pack at the top of the climb he tried to bridge a gap to the lone leader Jim Lund (BRC). At the 1 Km sign Mark stood and pulled away for the win. Steve finished strong after his breakaway bid, ending up 12th.

Criterium: Masters 35 The weather for Sunday's crit. was a perfect picture- warm, sunny, dry! Again Stowe was quite active, having 5 riders in the race. In the final lap a Stowe breakaway was caught and passed to set up Mark's jump to victory. Mark's win gave him the weekend double victory salute.

Masters 45 Steve Jean prepared his legs for the upcoming Nationals by sprinting to a 3rd place finish. He knew that Jimmy Fraser (Zephyr) would make an attempt for solo victory late in the race and waited for him to go. When he did Steve caught the Scots wheel and passed him, but so did Luigi del Buono (EuroSp) and Bill Harris (Unatt).
