PHENOMENAL: Le Grand Depart '07
By Graham Jones

On a recent trip back to my home town of Maidstone in England I was surprised to feel the influence of the Tour de France. After all it was December 2006 and I was without access to the web. My usual daily contact with the sport of cycling was in suspension. However I should not have been surprised as Maidstone lies on the route of the 2007 Tour.

The Fearless Attacker
By Graham Jones

Alexandre Vinokourov is without doubt one of the most exciting riders on the pro circuit today. He rides with passion, aggression and without fear. Often his impulsive and often spontaneous attacks strike fear into his adversaries as he disappears up the road at the most unexpected times.

An Insider's View
By Graham Jones

It's an Italian Thing...
By Graham Jones

Unlike the Tour, the Giro d'Italia (and the Vuelta a Espana) has steadfastly retained a very national flavor. Statistics show that since 1903 the Tour has had 36 winners from the home country. By contrast the Giro has seen 64 Italian winners.

Homage to Pellos
By
Graham Jones

In the 1930's and 1970's French cycling magazines were blessed with the contributions of René Pellarin who was better known under his pseudonym Pellos. Born in 1900, his prolific career lasted well into his later years when he passed away in 1998. Pellos is universally recognized as one of the greatest sports illustrators and cartoonists of his era.

A Loathsome Spectacle

Graham Jones

Whether in a city center, out in the open country, on a track or in the high mountains, cycling is a unique sport with immense spectator appeal. And so long as the sport continues the fight to eliminate the loathsome cheats, the crowds will flock to see this wonderful spectacle.

One of the great traditions of Spanish culture is the tapeo (or tapas-bar spree). When in full swing a tapeo is like a giant soirée and movable feast to which everyone is invited. A tapeo invents itself as it goes along; conversations with strangers, spontaneous introductions, and the unexpected appearance of an old friend or ex-lover…  Anything can happen on a tapeo, and often does.
