CyclingRevealed's Giro Perspective

Tappa 6, May 13th, Viterbo to Marina Di Grosseto, 153 km

Robbie Derailed the Train… Again!

This short fast stage from Viterbo to Marina di Grosseto was taylor made for the sprinters. The pace was brisk early with second placed Paolo Bettini collecting 6 second time bonus for winning the “InterGiro” sprint in Manciano, putting him in the maglia rosa virtuale (race leader on the road). Barring a mishap the race lead bounced back to ‘Il Grillo’.

Entering the finishing City of Marina di Grosseto the flying peloton faced 3 short and very technical laps of the City center. With the Fasso Bortolo “Silver Train” in full control with 4 km to go, disaster struck. Lead out spcialists Matteo Tosatto and Marco Velo touched wheels in a tight corner sending the train wide. The Friday the 13th mishap caused Alessandro Petacchi to crash. Much to the dismay of the Italian tifosi the powerful “Silver Train” was derailed!

Davitamon-Lotto took control of the single file peloton and led Robbie McEwen to the stage win.

For the seventh day in a row the Maglia Rosa changed hands. Paolo Bettini’s Intergiro sprint was enough to take back the race lead.  Danilo Di Luca’s Liquigas team save their energy for another day.
